Fitting and handling

Store boards flat in the room where they will be fitted for at least 48 hours before installation, allowing the MDF to acclimatise to the ambient temperature and humidity and reducing the risk of movement after fixing. Boards can be fixed using construction adhesive, finish nails, or a combination of both, working horizontally from floor to ceiling or ceiling to floor depending on your starting reference point. Once fitted, fill the butt joints and any fixings with a flexible decorators filler, sand back when dry, then apply a coat of MDF primer before your chosen paint finish for a seamless result.

FAQ

What is the difference between the 1200mm and 2400mm lengths?

The 1200mm boards are designed to butt-join end-to-end across a wall, which keeps individual board lengths manageable and avoids the extra cost of long-length freight. The butt joint, once filled and painted, is not visible. The 2400mm length suits walls up to standard ceiling height in a single run without a joint.

Can these MDF shadow gap boards be used in a bathroom or kitchen?

Standard MDF is not moisture-resistant and is not recommended in areas of direct water contact or high sustained humidity such as wet rooms or above worktops. For areas with occasional humidity, ensure adequate ventilation and apply a thorough sealed paint system including MDF primer on all cut edges and faces.

How many boards do I need to cover my wall?

Divide your wall height in millimetres by 131mm (the coverage per board) and round up to the nearest whole number to get the number of board runs required. Multiply by the number of lengths needed to span the wall width, then add 10 per cent for waste and cutting.
