Solid oak pig's ear handrail in a 4.2m length, wall mounted and ready to cut to suit your staircase, landing, ramp or level walkway. Made from American white oak, this hardwearing profile offers a smooth, comfortable grip and a clean natural finish for both residential and commercial settings.
Specifications
| Attribute | Detail |
|---|---|
| Material | American white oak (solid) |
| Profile | Pig's ear (wall-mounted handrail) |
| Length | 4.2 metres (4200mm) |
| Finish | Unfinished (ready to sand, stain or lacquer) |
| Application | Wall mounted, internal use |
What it's used for
- Staircase handrails fixed directly to a wall, replacing or complementing a balustrade system
- Landing and mezzanine edge rails where a wall-mounted solution is preferred
- Disabled access ramps and level walkways requiring a continuous, graspable rail to meet building regulations
- Refurbishment projects where an existing pine or softwood handrail is being upgraded to hardwood oak
Fitting and handling
Allow the handrail to acclimatise in the installation space for at least 48 hours before fixing, particularly in heated rooms, to minimise movement after fitting. Fix directly to the wall through the underside of the profile using standard screws, and use oak pellets or plugs to cover fixings for a flush, tidy finish. Once fitted, apply two to three coats of a hardwax oil, lacquer or stain suitable for interior hardwood to protect the surface and bring out the natural grain of the oak.
FAQ
Can this handrail be cut to a shorter length on site?
Yes. The 4.2m length can be cut down using a standard mitre saw or hand saw. If your staircase requires a raking cut or return mitre at the top or bottom, the profile can be mitred on site or by our team at Nottage Timber Merchants before despatch.
Does this handrail meet UK building regulations for domestic staircases?
The pig's ear profile provides a continuous, graspable surface and is widely used in domestic and commercial installations to comply with Part K of the Building Regulations. Your fixing centres and bracket selection will also need to meet the relevant guidance, so check with your architect or building control officer if you are unsure.
What fixings and brackets do I need to wall mount this handrail?
Standard wall-mounted handrail brackets compatible with a pig's ear profile are required. These are not included with the handrail. Fix brackets at no more than 1200mm centres, or as specified by the bracket manufacturer, into solid masonry or timber noggins behind plasterboard.
