What it's used for
- Anchoring handrail and balustrade systems on raised garden decking
- Supporting deck railing kits supplied without posts
- Fitting at the top and bottom of external timber steps
- Providing a structural fixing point for balcony balustrading
Fitting and handling
Store the posts flat and off the ground in a covered area before installation, and allow them to acclimatise to outdoor conditions for at least 48 hours prior to fitting. Fix the post securely to the deck frame or joist using appropriate stainless steel or hot-dipped galvanised hardware to prevent corrosion in outdoor conditions. The timber will accept paint, exterior stain or decking oil once fitted, though the cut ends should be treated with an end-grain preservative before installation.
FAQ
Is this newel post already treated or does it need additional preservative?
It comes pressure treated with Tanalith E, which protects against rot and fungal decay. You should still apply end-grain preservative to any cut surfaces made during installation, as the treatment does not fully penetrate the cut ends.
What size hole or post support do I need for an 83x83mm newel post?
You need a post support, post socket or concrete fixing rated for a 75mm or 83mm section, depending on the product you choose. Always check the internal dimensions of your post support before ordering, as some are sized for a planed finish which reduces the section slightly.
Can I use this post with a standard decking balustrade kit?
Yes. Many balustrade kits are sold without newel posts, and this 83x83mm section is a commonly specified size. Check your kit's requirements for post centres and fixing method before purchasing the quantity you need.
