Fitting and handling
Kiln dried stock should be allowed to acclimatise in the room where it will be used for at least five to seven days before machining or fitting, particularly in heated interiors where humidity levels fluctuate. Hard White Maple machines cleanly with sharp tooling and accepts oil, lacquer, and hardwax oil finishes well, though pre-raising the grain with a light water wipe is advisable before final sanding. Store boards flat and supported along their full length, away from direct heat sources and damp concrete floors, to prevent cupping or distortion.
This stock is cut from live or waney edge timber. If you wish to retain the natural edge, add a note at checkout. Without a note, the live edge will be removed to provide the best usable yield from each board.
FAQ
What does FAS grade mean for Hard White Maple?
FAS stands for Firsts and Seconds, the highest commercial hardwood grade in the North American lumber grading system. Boards graded FAS must be at least 6 inches wide and yield a minimum of 83 per cent clear, defect-free timber on the poorest face. This makes FAS maple ideal for applications where large, clean sections are needed.
Is Hard White Maple suitable for flooring in a UK home?
Yes. Hard White Maple has a Janka hardness rating of around 1,450 lbf, making it harder than European Oak and well suited to high-traffic domestic flooring. It is widely used in sports halls and dance floors for the same reason. Allow it to acclimatise properly before installation and finish with a suitable hardwax oil or lacquer.
Can I order specific lengths rather than random lengths?
This product is supplied in random lengths as it is cut from waney edge boards. If you have a specific length requirement, contact Nottage Timber Merchants directly before ordering and we will advise on what is available from current stock.
